Doyden Castle was built as a retreat for local businessman Samuel Symons, where, it is reputed the partying and gambling were quite excessive!
A boozer, gambler and all-round party animal, Symons took hedonism so seriously he built a castle in which to rave. More than 170 years later, Doyden Castle still overlooks Lundy Bay and the sleepy Cornish hollow of Port Quin, a village so deserted that permanent residents could meet in a phone box without rubbing shoulders. Though his ample wine bins remain on the lower ground floor as testament to the good times, things have quietened down considerably since Symons drank his last.
