Gulland Rock

Gulland Rock is a large Island situated in Padstow bay about ¾ of a mile off Harlyn beach. Local seals use the Island as a nursery for their young, and trips are available to see these inquisitively beautiful creatures at play on the rocks and in the waters around the island.

In the late 19th century a man thought it would make an ideal place to live. Workmen were sent to the rock to prepare a level site on which to build his wooden house. Friends and acquaintances of the mane begged him to give up the idea, pointing out the obvious dangers both to himself and others should a rescue attempt become necessary. It appears that he came to his senses and ditched the idea. Although sometimes at night it appears to have a light shining from it.
