This brooding 13th-century castle sits on the rugged and spectacular Atlantic coast in Cornwall, which recalls the myth and mystery associated with King Arthur and Merlin the magician.
Built half on the mainland and half on a jagged headland projecting into the Cornish sea, Tintagel Castle is one of the most spectacular historic sites in Britain. Its association with King Arthur makes it also one of the most famous. But the history of this enigmatic place stretches back centuries before the first tales of the legendary king shrouded it in the mists of romance. Find out more about Tintagel’s history and legends below. This site is definitely worth a visit but be prepared for some strenuous steep step climbing! The ticket office is by the main road in Tintagel, you then walk down to the main site entrance. It was a particularly busy day and this made it particularly hard going up some of the narrow steps as there was traffic in both directions and if visiting again I would definitely get there early to beat the crowds. For those having difficulty walking back up the hill to the ticket office at the end of the visit, they run a land rover service for a small charge.
