The Lizard (Cornish: An Lysardh)

The name “Lizard” is most probably a corruption of the Cornish name “Lys Ardh” the Cornish for fortress

Many of the rocks off Lizard Point are named: Barges Rock; Taylor’s Rock; Man of War – The Man of War Gneiss, Men Par; Mulvin; Clidgas Rocks; Pen Ervan; The Dales; Enoch Rock.

Over the centuries, many of these rocks have been responsible for wrecking a great number of ships. The SS Ilston, The Hansy and SV Cromdal  to name but a few.
